Calcium buildup. How can it be removed?

Hi and thanks for reading.
I recently reiceved my mothers old fish tank and upon cleaning it out I noticed a thick calcium buildup on the glass near the top, especially where she had the box filter hanging at. I am not sure how to deal with it, as I use soft water in all of my tanks and don't get that buildup.
I was just curious as to how I may be able to remove it, as it is unsightly, and unfavorable. I tried bleach which did nothing. Considered CLR but thought twice and jumped on here. Any advice will be helpful.

My 40 gallon was an inherited tank as well and had the same problems. I scraped it gently with a razor blade to remove the thickest (dont do this if it's an acrylic tank) and then scrubbed it with aquarium salt much like you would use a scouring powder. What was left on the glass doesn't show up when it's full of water.
I would NOT use CLR. I would worry about any residue left over and what it would do to your fish.
Good Luck.

Great I'll have to run to the corner store and pick up some straight razors. Like I said I was weary about using anything other than vinegar and bleach. Thank you.

If you get the worst of it all, it really won't be noticeable when your tank is full of water. Be careful with your razor not to scratch...even glass will scratch if not careful. I found it scraped easier with the razor if I worked with it wet...just be careful and don't scrape yourself  I held my blade with a washcloth to give me a bit of a better grip and to help protect my fingers.
Have fun and good luck :thm:

Bleach won't remove calcium build-up. vinegar will if you leave it on for a while to soak. If you laid the tank on it's side and poured some vinegar on it so it could soak for a while it would help. If you have hard water, periodic use of a razor blade is the best way.
