what substrates could i buy in bulk (like at a hardware store)
i'll be using eco complete as my top layer of substrate, but i was hoping there was something a little cheaper that i could use for the bulk of the substrate (it's a very large tank)
i guess more of a "filler" plantable substrate.

i got mine at lowes. its called something like pea gravel. it was 50 pounds for $5 or less. you just have to wash it a lot.

This is what I was going to suggest as well. I've been reading where folks even can make it black by coating it with sugar and baking it at certain temps. The sugar carmelizes and seeps into the pores of the pea gravel. I mention the color part because you said you are using it with Eco-Complete, and the pea gravel is kinda light brown naturally (if memory serves).

If anyone is interested I can get the detailed directions for the coloring process.

i wouldnt mind the link. what i do like about it is it isnt a solid color. is a mixture of colors.

Check out Soilmaster Select, it's commonly used in sports fields and come in charcoal. Very good plant substrate and you can buy a 50lb bag for under $20, no need for the Eco-Complete.

Lesco is the distributor.

:iagree: I can't say enough good things about this stuff.
