I'm just starting to get into planting my tanks. I bought my first live plant today, a java fern. The leaves have some black dots on them which look like dead plant matter and one leaf has what looks like small brown spores on it's underside. I can pick these spores off. Are these problems anything I should worry about?

Don't pick the spores off -- the java fern is an actual fern, those are how it reproduces.

The other spots are either dead plant matter (not much to be done) or algae. I'd leave it alone for the time being. In a week or so if it gets worse not better, consider moving the plant to another tank and using an anti-algae treatment.

Those honestly look pretty healthy. I still have no java fern because all the plants I see locally are crazy overpriced and half dead.

Ok thanks. My LFS generally has good stock but I've never paid much attention to plants nor do I know much about them. Everything I read before jumping into planting was about co2, lighting, nutrients, and stuff like that. Not really much about actual plants though.
