Something wierd is happening in the tank...we've had it for a couple of months with no real excitement...Now we have a fat bellied Rainbow Shark and another Rainbow with funky growths on it's head...there's eggy looking things all over the glass...could they be breeding...and if so, is there a way to make this happen sucessfully??? After trying to research on these guys with poor luck I have found that we should not have two Rainbows together (they seem to get along, by the way)...any ideas??

Can you list what other fish you have in your tank?? They will get along for a while, but it won't work out long term. I made the same mistake, and about a year later I found one dead behind the tank (jumped out from being stressed I am assuming). Mine is really active at night, so I think we might miss alot of the aggression

do you have corydoras or cichlids inthe tank? it is highly unlikly for them to captive breed

The trick with Rainbows is get them to stop breeding; they breed daily when well kept. Whether or not any eggs hatch and survive in a tank depends on the species, the absence of other fish, and the available infusoria for food or its replacement by supplements by the fishkeeper. Long term the male:female ratio does matter; females should be in large excess or the low numbers of females will be exhausted.
