Does anyone have any experience with breeding discus? My discus pair tend to eat their babies every time they hatch. Any suggestions on why they do this?
It is very common for young, inexperienced pairs to either eat the eggs or eat the wrigglers shortly after hatching. Females usually mature sooner than the males, so sometimes it's just a matter of waiting until they are both truly mature enough to get it right. Do you know the approximate age of your discus? They will do this time and time again. Some never stop eating eggs/new hatches and breeding them is abandoned. You have a better chance of getting them to "get it right" if they are totally alone in a breeding tank. Even then, it may take many, many tries before they get it right. I think this issue is the #1 frustration with people trying to get their young adult discus to raise a spawn.
