I've got a 125 gallon tank that is starting to come together. We were in Petco recently getting a few of the more common supplies. My wife & son saw some small, blue lobsters in one of their tanks. I'm guessing it was some kind of blue, freshwater crayfish or something.

Will these work in my tank? We're wanting to add some color, and my wife seemed to think these things were just awesome.

I've got 1 VERY large pleco, two pink gouramis, one very large Silver Scat, and one very small unknown fish... Oh... There are also two small catfish.

Looking to add some color and some life to the tank. Any other suggestions are most welcome.

Thanks.

Joe

crayfish will kill a fish if it gets too close... they have an instant reaction to close their pincer if anything touches it... id guess that ur bottomfeeders would get sliced, if ur catfish wouldent eat it first since many catfish eat crayfish in the wild...

I've got a blue one, and have had a couple regular brown crayfish in the past.

Crayfish are a blast to watch. They can be very fun.

Out of the 3 that I've had, I've yet to see a cray attack a fish. I believe they will only do this if they are poorly fed, or otherwise provoked.

I had the blue cray in with my very aggressive red-tail shark, and the shark would literally head-butt the thing, and block the cray from entering caves, etc. The crayfish would push the shark out of the way, but never use his claws to try to slice him.

(maybe I just have a very polite cray?)

In any case, if the cray is well fed I don't think you should have problems... but it does make me nervous sometimes just watching him sit there with open claws... maybe one of these day's he'll snap just for fun and cut off a fin or something? :(

But they are very cool to watch... very unique animals.

pedz, what do you feed ur crayfish.. my experience with them is with smaller fish...and a bunch of salamanders that ive seen a crafish slice all their tails off.. leavin them to drown. maybe they act better with large fish???

I've heard those things can get pretty aggressive, too.

Compatibility. As mentioned above Crayfish generally make life miserable for small animals living on the bottom of their aquarium including other Crayfish. It seems to be best to keep just one unless you have a large aquarium. Crayfish usually cannot bother fish that stay off the bottom.info on crayfish

that link doesnt work (for me atleast) double check it plz

Right now the cray is in a 40g tank with the following:

4 small rainbowfish (1-2")
3 giant danios (3-4")
3 small clown loaches (2-3")
2 yo-yo loaches (2-3")
1 upside-down catfish (2-3")
1 gold tinfoil barb (6-7")

The fish I'm most concerned with is the catfish. But the catfish and cray sometimes share a cave, and have had no issues yet! Catfish will stay away if a claw is pointed at him!

Have not seen the cray try to attack any fish yet.

Cray eats shrimp pellets as well as sinking wafers. He is a hungry guy, and I keep him well fed with at least a couple of pellets a day. This probably keeps the urge to hunt fish at bay.

Also - when I had 2 crays they would rarely clash. I think I saw them "fight" maybe once or twice in the 6 months or so that I had them (both died while molting within about a month of each other).

In any case they never got claws cut off or anything like that. No serious damage.

Maybe this will work

www.****************

this is the main site, crays are under on the left side, misc. critters. there is a lot of info on crays, just scroll down to crayfish and click on the "here" to learn more thing.

This site has some pretty neat info if you just explore around and use the links, the prices pages have info that you can click on near the pictures.

Really fun site, lots of info

Sounds like I should be OK in a tank my size. Maybe get two and see if they start going after the fish. The only fish I could see the cray going after would be the catfish. Those guys aren't huge, and hang out on the bottom. But, in a 125 gallon tank, there is plenty of room to spread out.

Thanks for the advice and the information. I'm going to have to do a bit more habitat, but I think some blue crays are on the way.

a good friend of mine had a blue lobster. It was very active and a lot of fun to watch. However, it would eat anything it could catch.
