Blue eyed goldfish (Shubunkin), common or rare?

I've owned a few goldfish, and watch for them at local fish stores and before now had never spotted one with a bright, crisp blue eye. The eye seems to be functional, and doesn't appear to be blue due to an injury. No matter whether it's natural, or environmental, it's beautiful, and very unique!

I fell for him before I noticed the eye, and was quite intrigued when I did notice the eye. We have a dog with similar bi-eyes (brown, and crisp blue) so joke we have 'matching' animals now ;) He's currently in our quarantine tank, and I can't wait to put him in with the other goldfish! He's quite active (More than my other Shubunkin).

I can try to get better photos later if requested. I need to wipe the tank since it's got the algae spots starting, which made the pics distorted.

I can't remember if I did but I must have seen the blue tint on the eyes before with one of my shubunkins and some of my comets. As for the rarity, I cannot answer that.

:welcome: to AC by the way!

Thanks David!

I've actually been meaning to e-mail you to ask if you knew of any Oregon/west coast breeders who breeds Shubunkins. I'd really like a couple fancy fishes to add to my tanks (and future pond), but don't know how to even look for breeders.

I assume most fish people aren't online, and you just need to know where to meet them in person? Also seems most Goldfish people, breed the 'round' varieties, and not the fancy comets, and Shubunkins. I don't personally care for the 'round' fish, but would like some fancier fish in the 'normal' Goldfish body-type.

Hey another Oregonian! I'm down in Eugene.

There are a few breeders around. You might try going to the Portland show or club meetings. I do a booth at the Portland show so if you go stop by and say hi.

I hope to breed a few things this spring like bristol shubunkins and blue egg phoenix but I usually just buy the fish if they are commercially produced. I bring in Shubunkins and Sarassas direct from the farms or cherry pick at the wholesalers so I usually have lots of nice fish available. You're welcome to come visit sometime.

I just brought in 3 boxes of very nice sarassas with very nice red.

I was just at a wholesaler but only bought fancy fish like red cap lionheads, calico orandas, jade seal orands, calico pearlscales, huge wen lionheads, black pearscales etc...

I'll try to get a few pictures posted this weekend.

Oh! For some reason I thought you were in Southern Cali! Are you by chance the owner of any of the fish stores in Eugene? I ask because if so, I likely 'know' you, since we spend a lot of time in Eugene stores :)

I'm going to drop you an e-mail. I'd love to visit someday. I'm not far from Eugene at all.
