biOrb Tanks

I'm a very new member to the community and I have a question. Have any of you guys checked out any of the biOrb tanks ? If yes, what do you think of them? Are they really good? are they worth their price?

Well...I think they pleasing to the eye....but do not provide the best environment for fish...too little footprint for air exchange. Sorry...can't buy in to these.

Don't like them. Espically not with how they advertise them with like six gold fish in it.

only get them if you want to keep a betta or a couple small fish (like 6 white clouds or tetra). i am selling mine, pm if interested.

I fell for the idea of the biorb, got mine for Christmas. I was planning to put goldfish in it until I found this site, so now I have six white clouds and a trapdoor snail (I was initially disappointed about the goldfish, but the white clouds are quite cool little fish, and the snail is fascinating).

One thing in their favour is that the instructions do introduce a newbie to the idea of cycling - I wouldn't have known about that otherwise, and they do tell you not to add too many fish at once (albeit they are talking about goldfish!). And they are nice and compact. But on the downside, there isn't much room for manoeuvre inside, as the opening at the top is so small - it's tricky if you're trying to anchor plants or remove stuff. My next tank will be a 'proper' tank (yes, I'm hooked, and planning for it already!).

If you are still interested, check out ebay for used ones - for some reason, there are always plenty on there ...

Not sure if it was a "biorb" brand, but I have seen spherical tanks like that. The best part was the warning sticker (like the ones they have all over swimming pools with little pictures). This one showed a beam of light coming throught the window, being focused by the "biorb" (like a giant magnifying glass) and lighting a couch on fire. I swear to God. The worst part is, that had to have happened for them to make a warning sticker about it.

Could a rectangular tank concentrate sun rays like that too? Or is it just bacuase of the spherical shape?

I took a quick reading in their giude section, and it will say those are designed for smaller varieties of fantail goldfish. They clearly areagainsts comets or large orandas.

Also, their torpical version of the tank advices the use of small fish too.

Yeah, they are almost on the right track. Their website has some OK basic information, even if the goldfish part is misleading. But I bet most people just see that there are goldfish on the box, and don't do any more research (and I'll admit, I wouldn't have, if I hadn't alredy found AC).

Definitely a step up from a small unfiltered tank, I would think - and a good couple of steps up from an unfiltered goldfish bowl. But still not good enough for goldfish. My white clouds seem 'happy' enough, and it is training me to keep up my water changes (30% every 5 days).

I would think the biorb could function as a lens and focus sunlight to start a fire. Sheesh what a way to burn a house down. You would never think of it!

A flat tank would not do this, but I would wonder about a bowfront.

Once I came home to (and put out) a smoldering fire that started in my bathroom as a result of (ready for this?) sunlight focused on the window frame by a magnifying mirror left on the sill. Ten minutes later and I would have come home to a full blaze. I was shocked it could do that!
