I have a ten gallon with one male betta three rasboras, one white cloud, and one clown pleco. It is also planted. My male betta has this white stringy thing hanging from his poopy area. I have never seen his poop though. It has been there for over a day. He is not acting himself and I am terribly worried. Is it a parasite? What should I do? Here is a link to some pictures....

Water parameters are...

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
KH 14
PH 8.5 (very high I know, hasn't seemed to bother him before)

This is an established tank that has been set up for quite some time.

Thanks for any help!

I feed him every day (usually) with either Spirulina flakes or New Life Spectrum. I had a betta that I switched his diet from the above to betta food and he got constipated and died. I have three bettas right now and they all eat the same thing.

He is not acting himself at all. He is resting at the bottom on a plant. He won't flare or eat. I'm so worried! :( The stringy thing might be coming from his poopy hole, or it kinda looks like it may be coming from the side.

Im pretty sure it is just poop...Sad looking stringy poop mind you...Dont feed for a day and let his system clean out...Why are you feeding him spirulina flakes? That may be your culprit..Bettas are pure carnivore and the veggie content may be throwing his stomach off...If stringy poop persists and he does not seem to be getting any more active, he may have some sort of internal bacterial infection. Maracyn 2 should take care of it.

Thanks so much! What should I be feeding the little guy? I don't want to make him constipated. I think the betta food that I tried was too high in protein and fat and that is what made my other betta constipated.

For now I'll keep him on the Spectrum. I dosed with Aqua-Sol and raised the temp to 85 like it said just in case. Should I stop with that?

Thanks again!

Spectrum is a good food....Constipation and other digestive issues in these fish tend to be more temp. related then anything...Maintain temp between 75 and 80 and he should be fine...Bettas need high protein and crude fats so dont be put off by them. I feed the higest protein foods I can find...
85 is ok for a few days...Keep an eye on him and if he starts to decline do the maracyn 2 treatment.

Thank you so much! He is feeling better now. I fed him some blood worms, along w/ my other bettas, and they all loved them.

yea my gouramis had the same problem, i just switched their diet from pure flakes to mix of bloodworms/flakes/shrimp pellets. they are healthier and happier than ever : }

ok i just get a betta in a 10 gallon tank with 3 red sword tails, 2 yellow sword tails, 1 green cory cat, 1 rubberlipped pleco, and 1 paradice gourami. he was the healthiest looking one there but hes very unhealthy-looking. he seams to have had his fins cut, his scales look like sum1 erased them with a pencil eraser, he sits in the same corner and looks at the TV(i think he likes family guy) hes been there for like 4 hours. i think he missed his 1.5 cups of water they had him in at the store. i wanted to buy all of them but my mom and wllet wouldnt allow it... they only had males...i wanted 2 females but...it was a no go..i was wondering..i have 2 female and 1 male red sword tail and 1 female and 1 male yellow sword tail, will they breed?? they are live bearers right?? do i need a fry tank??
