Hey guys I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for tank mates for a male betta? He's pretty passive as far as bettas go. I was thinking a school of tetra or something similar. The tank is 12 gallons. Thanks for the help!

Yep, smaller tetra's would work. I wouldn't do any Serpea or larger tetra they can get nippy towards your betta. So maybe some neons or cardinals. Some little Khuli loaches as bottom dwellers are one of my favorites in 10-20 gallon tanks.

Let us know what you decide. Pictures are always nice too :D

Whatever you decide on, make sure it is a slower swimming fish. Anything that is psycho (a.k.a danios) will stress out the betta.

Hi
Corydoras are nice in a school .Stay on the bottom and will clean up leftovers.. gary

i keep my betta in a 10 gallon with some cories and a runty male guppy

I have also had success with otocinclus, honey gouramis, female betta (had a second tank on hand in case it got nasty), lone mosquito fish, and cherry barbs

I was pretty interested in gouramis and had heard that they would be okay with bettas but I was a little skeptical. But they got along well for you too?

I don't trust more than one anabantoid in a tank... They are very territorial, and in a 12 gal tank there just isn't enough space for them to set up their own territories.

Very true. I put a betta in a 10 gal with a Zebra Danio and I thought it would be fine, because the danio could outswim the betta, and I didnt think anything would come about.

2 days later, the half of the Zebra Danio's face was missing. Right eye and cheek.

So now I have a divider and the Zebra Danio has half a face. (Alot of tissue grew back but not the eye.)

BUt he is still alive and happy as ever. haha

I worry that a 12 gallon wouldn't be large enough for a school of some of the species of corys. I agree, I love my cory's. They are always busy but my 10 corys in my 125 gallon tank use ALL of the areas in it. Always busy with their janitorial work but they use every bit of the foot print.

If you do go with corys just make sure it's some of the smaller species such as the habrosus or pygmaeus species, Dwarf, Pygmy, or "Dainty" I've heard them called. You would want a school of 5+. Cory's are a fun, busy, and clownish fish to keep but I feel they are often put in tanks too small for their activities. Just my 2 cents worth.

My new betta seems to get along just fine with my neon blue dwarf gourami.? The gourami was curious at the start but didnt go close enough to nip him. Since that they are just happily swimming in close proximity to each other. :)
