I was at the LFS today and I noticed they got these new betta "bowls" in stock. What the heck?!?! They are only like 3" x 3"..the smallest betta containers I've ever seen! They almost look like upside down light bulbs... who in the world would think that such a tiny container is an acceptable place to keep ANY living thing?!?! I wouldn't keep a cricket in that tiny bowl!!

:mad2: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:

bettas arent really seen as fish, persay. But more like a fashion statement/ or home decor for your house. Something tiny that adds a little pesaz to a room IE bettas in a vase or bettas in a stupid hang on the wall orb, or a little tote. Its maddening really. I once saw a teacher give to her student a betta in a 2 liter bottle with a plant sticking outside the cap. :wtf:

seen those bowls, went into a petland store, counted 10 (yes 10) people holding a bowl and a fish with obviously no research done. It was the new "faze" in that store, everyone in the fish section had one in there hands and all employees were telling people about them and everything.

betta lava lamps.....

It's just disgusting to me to think of putting a betta (or any fish) into one of those ridiculous things!! I have a pair of bettas in my 55 gallon, another in my 10 gallon, and will certainly have one or more in the 120 I'm in the process of setting up. They seem to thrive in large planted tanks and swim all over the aquarium... I can't imagine keeping one in a 3"x3" cell..

also at petsmart i saw they were advertising to put bettas in a large martini glass...i couldnt look at it and i was trying to get my husband out of the store before he made a seen...thats why i hate going to petsmart...:headshake2:

also ive seen smaller, with bettas in them, i think the smallest ive seen was 3"x2" or it could have been 2"x2"

It comes from the misconception that the betta lives in small pockets of water, in the wild during the dry season or when the rice paddies are drained. While they may do that for a short period, it is hardly the norm for the bettas we are buying. And not a desirable condition for those in the wild. It is just survival.

So is it can happen there, it must be okay. Pretty lame logic. But someone will chime in shortly and say how it is really okay, it doesn't hurt them and they take care of the fish. It always happens in the betta bowl discussions.
