Betta adjusting or just hyper personality?

I got a new betta yesterday (Thursday) for my 5.5g tank, having lost the beloved previous occupant last week.

He has been on the go non-stop! He's definitely far more of a high energy fish than my last betta (which was my first) ... swims from end to end in the tank, up and down the glass, swims directly into the current from the filter like a dog sticking its head out a car window LOL ... No perching on the plants or chilling out for this guy.

Is this just adjusting to new, larger surroundings, and getting used to things such as his own reflection? Or is it likely his personality?

Either way, it sure seems a sign of good health!

Thanks in advance!

He's just being himself. From my experiences with my clan, they tend to be more active when they are younger, and as they age they get mellower and tend to rest in the plants more. Jade's watching me from his perch in his bowl right now, and when I first got him almost two years ago, he would never stop swimming around. Maybe they need to pace themselves more evenly!

I agree with switchcats - when i first got my betta he was hyper. Now (5 months later) he still swims around a lot - never really taking a break or hanging out - but he slowed down a little. Probably young age - or the excitement of having all the room to swim around in.

Is the water current low enough in his tank? Bettas sometimes have a hard time with a lot of water movement...mine gets positively hyper if the flow is turned up high, and becomes mellow and almost inert when there's no filtration. You can often adjust filter flow, even putting a sponge in the output can help to reduce agitation.

The filter is rated at 50 gph, and I have it set at about 50% of capacity. There's plenty of spaces with calm water and with plants for shelter ... he just chooses to go right in front of the filter output sometimes LOL

Seems just to be enthusiasm so far, inspecting everything in the tank several times, maybe an OCD fish (matching owner, heheheh).

I can totally relate...my betta paced his tank so much I upgraded 3 times!! Now he just swims around and around in circles for hours and I realize it's just his style.

He'll probably mellow with age (like his owner? ;))

Glad to know it's natural :) This is only my 2nd betta, and the last was very laid back already.

Now if the fish starts watching DVDs and going online instead of swimming in circles ... then he'll be too much like the owner ...
