Best way to clean up water spills on carpet

So a few days ago I spilled a fish bag of water on my carpet and I forgot to clean it after I finished what I was doing and now my living room smells like death. I remember I did this a while ago too, but I forgot how I fixed it.

What would be the best way to draw the water out of the carpet, clean the mess and make the floor stop smelling?

depends on what kinda floor you got. (type of carpet) i always find that a bucket of hot water and some Resolve and a scrub brush work well on the top of the carpet. and just let it dry (Dont soak the floor tho) after it drys use a fabric spray like Fabreeze or fabric refresh to help more with oder. if that dont work then a good (rental carpet cleaner from walmart) to get the under side and the pad and sub floor. Hope this helps...it does me..dont have to rent carpet cleaner most of the time..
 
I have berber carpeting.

I lay a few folded bath towels on the water, and walk on them a bit. they draw the water nicely out of the flooring. then afyer a few hours i remove the towels and the carpet is almost dry.
 
If you have all wool berber carpeting, not much you can do except try to pat it up with a dry cloth and live with the wet wool smell till it dries. If you can kick up the room heat in that area to help dry it faster without risking mold issues.

Any other carpet, pretty much just pat or vac with a wet dry...
 
Sounds like it's probably down into the carpet padding.

Simple Solution should clean that up.

You soak the area with it and it 'eats' the odor...then you let it dry.
Really works, I've been using it for 10+ years on cat, fish and human organic stains. great stuff!

Pet Supplies Plus carries it, there should be one near ya.
Last time I checked, you get a free spray bottle with gallon purchase...good deal.
 
+1 on the simple solution. That stuff is amazing. Cleans and deodorizes like no other and leaves no funky/floral smells.
 
the nasty thing about carpet is once it dries out the item is still in the underpad portion, so once you get that area wet again expect some smell to return. i spilt milk once as a child in my room and everytime i got the carpet wet again it the smell of spoiled milk would come back...

you really should have gotten an adult so they could steam clean it...gross!!!!:crazy:
