I need some opinions as to what color of sand is more ideal for african cichlids. I havent decided yet if Ill be keeping Malawi or Tanganyikans. Im reading conflicting ideas on this. On one hand Ive read that white sand is best because it more closely resembles the substrate in the rift lakes. On the other hand, Ive read that darker substrate is better because the fish's color will be more pronounced. And also because the fish will feel less stress due to less reflecting of light off of the substrate. Im really confused as to what to go with. Thanks!

id go with whatever is natural. things evolve for certain niches, and ive always felt like its our obligation to cater to that as much as possible.

my humble opinion~~

are your lights going to be really bright? probably not, since you probably wont have plants. i bet the reflection wont be that bad

No lights will not be that bright. Just an all-glass twin tube. Thanks for the reply. Ive seen some pics though and I must say the black sand looks beautiful.

Personally I try to make it as natural as possible & I usually stick with the most natural & basic of colors where substrate is concerned.

Playsand for me. If the sand is too white looking it can make the fishes colours look washed out.Dark sand is better for victorian cichlids as they feel less comfortable with a light substrate

I use crushed coral and like it a lot.

The black substrates look very cool, with a black background and lots of rockwork.
