Bah. I hate this. Gotta euthanize a danio. But its time.

Question is: I'm going to do the clove oil method. As seen on http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-the-most-humane-way-to-euthanize-a-fish.htm.
However, I have no vodka.
I heard you are able to do it with just clove oil, maybe a stupid question, but do you just add more clove oil until the fish stops breathing?
Or is there an alternative to vodka that can be added?

Thanks...

A lethal overdose of clove oil is 50 drops per gallon (3.78 liters), or 5x stronger than the initial dose that anesthetizes the fish. Using the same example, if the fish is in 3 gallons (11 liters) of tank water, the jar's lethal mixture will include 50 x 3 = 150 drops of clove oil. Administer it the same way, by first emulsifying (shaking) the jar before adding the mixture to the fish's container.

Sorry to hear you need to euthanize :(

i use the ice water method. with a danio it'll be instant. i've tried the clove oil but that stuff really sticks on, even after washing in the dishwasher. and then everything else stinks. or maybe i just had a bad dishwasher. . . .

sorry about your fish btw.

I agree with w-chicken...I put the fish in a small container of tank water and then into the freezer...
I don't know..how can any of us really know the best method....
Sorry about your danio...

no no no. freezing the fish is slow and traumatic. freeze the water until a thin crust of ice forms on top, then break the ice and drop the fish in. instant.

I had to euthanase a sick Gourami the other day. I'm afraid to say I couldn't face seeing him in ice or clove oil so my OH lifted him straight from the tank onto a hard surface, in a carrier bag and I flattened him with a very heavy object. Sounds awful but it was instant. Best thing I could think of so he wasn't flapping around, gasping etc.
Sorry for your loss, Andi pants.

I freeze the water until I need a spoon to break through the thin ice formed on top. I generally wiat until the ice is around 1/8"

What I do is I net the fish then I put them in a box and put them in the frezer and then they will die in about 15 mins. Sometimes I will put the fish in a bucket with really hot water and they just die. Sounds cruel, but the fish were really sick. I have had to kill fish in over two years because my fish are healthy.
