Has any one ever uses Algaefix? Does it work? Did it hurt you fish or plants in any way. Does it get rid of Black hair algae and green algae on plants? I am a little worried that it might hurt my fresh water fish. I want to use it on 23 tanks but I got a small bottle to try it and am affraid it will kill my fish.
Thanks!:):help:

I wouldn't use anything personally. I don't like adding chemcials to the water. It should be fine, but before try turning out hte lights for a week. The darkness for that duration should be sufficient to kill off the bacteria without really harming your plants. Also you may want to try a UV sterilizer.

My personal advice is to avoid any and all algae removers. I have known several people that have used "safe" algacides, and lost most, if not all of their fish.
The correct balance of light, plants and water changes can help control algae.

Agreed, not a fan of chemical algacides. Far better to remove as much as you can manually, then control it by water changes, light schedule, and fertilizing so that plants can monopolize nitrogen. Heck, I'm a bigger fan of adding algae eaters like snails--nerites are great and won't breed in FW.

I don't like using chemicals to combat algae anymore, but when I did I used API Algaefix. It always seemed like it only really worked to clear up green water, not algae growing on objects.

It definitely won't do anything about black hair algae (that was my original purpose for it too).

One of my tanks that has been up and running close to a year... one of the nicest tanks I have, started turning green about 2 months ago. Nothing has changed. The lights are on a timer. Plants not not changed. Stock has not changed. Regular water changes and filter cleaning, replacement. Then one day, green water.... after a few days it would get so green you couldn't see the fish. I would do multiple water changes in a day. It would clear up for a couple of days then turn green again. I cut the time on for the lights. Didn't help. I blacked out the tank with no lights. It cleared up in a few days but as soon as any light hit it, it turned green again.

I emptied the tank including gravel and cleaned everything. Re-resetup tank.... all was good for about 3 weeks then green water again.

I used API Algaefix... one dose. 24 hours later the water is perfectly crystal clear. It's still clear. No fish acted strange or had problems. It says not to use it on invertebrates. But I will have no problem using it again if needed. It's the first time in about 40 tanks and a few years of experience that I couldn't clear algae through management. I was reluctant to get it but it was a last resort and if I had known it worked that fast and that well, I would have bought it the first week I was having problems and saved me a ton of time and headaches.

I have used this product in the past and it does work with no ill affects to your fish. It says safe for plants and for the most part, it is, It may do a little damage to Vals but they will come back

Regarding GW...

Have you tried letting it ride out? I know, it's ugly...but it's seldom harmful to anything. I know Rachel has one tank that every year, like clockwork, turns green for a few weeks. Since it's an invert tank, I don't think she's ever tried any chemicals and since it clears on it's own, probably better to just let it be.

Just curious.
