My golden dojo loach started to have swimbladder problems last year. He was floating like a cork for awhile. I treated him with Melafix, but it didn't really help the buoyancy. Either way, he still eats like a pig!

Since then, I've kept my tank much cleaner (and healthier), and his buoyancy is much better. Sometimes he still floats a little, but not nearly as bad as it used to be. I'd say he's about 90% better. Like I said, he still eats great and has a will to live.

But one strange thing is that his barbels (whiskers around his mouth) have shrunk. They used to be long so that his snout looked like a mole's. Now they're just little nubs. They haven't grown back. A fish physiologist told me it sounds like a neurological problem. That makes sense to me, as that would explain the barbels (part of his sensory system) being affected.

Has anyone else heard of such a thing? I don't know if I'll do anything about it, as he is pretty happy otherwise. He's just my "special" fish :o This is the same fish that seeks out my hand when I do water changes, and curls up in my palm. I do love him so.

Its called 'barbel erosion', and is usually caused by a bacterial infection via minute barbel injuries. Make sure that your tank bottom is well vacuumed, you do very regular water changes and filter maintenance, and that your gravel is not oversharp. The barbels will grow back in time.

DITTO!

Oh, thank you, Toirtis. I'm glad somebody's heard of this.

Yes, I realize the problem was probably brought on by less than desireable cleaning practices. I was kinda bad about it until I got a nicer tank for my birthday, and being on this site. I can now advocate first-hand the importance of tank upkeep.

But he first started showing signs of infection last summer. Why haven't the barbels grown back by now? Poor guy, has he had little infections in them for over a year???

Also, is it related to his swimbladder issues? Could it be that both were caused by poor housekeeping, thus bacterial infections?

I will take your advice of replacing the gravel. I'm thinking of using aragamax sand. It says it's safe to pass through the gills of sand-sifting fishes, so I'm guessing it's safe for his barbels. He'd probably enjoy burrowing in it, too! I noticed that it also says it reduces nitrate. How will that affect my plants?

Yes it could be. Poor housekeeping means poor water quality, poor water quality means stressed fish, making them more susceptible to infections. I was very poor in tank maintenance then, I found this out first hand. Although there can be other things aside from bacterial infection that can lead to swimbladder issues. Good luck, hope the barbels grow back :o
