i have one female and two males in 10 gallon, trying to breed them. just put them in together last night. the female is huge. the water is softer from what they usualy live in, and temperature is lower, so there is change for them in order to get them to breed. i've been feeding them live food. what am i missing? anybody knows exactly how to breed rosy barbs?

still nothing. the female stoped eating. i was wondering if it's normal for a female to stop eating right before egg laying.

No it is not normal for the female to stop eating before breeding. My Rosy Barbs exhibit breeding behavior every morning in my tank with the males turning very bright red and the females turning pinkish. They still eat like pigs. If I wanted to rear fry all I need to do is throw in a spawning mop the night before and they will spawn on that. My poor tetras won't have their caviar though.

I'd reacclimate her to the main tank. The best thing you can do if you want them to breed is feed her a lot of high protein meals like shrimp, bloodworms and even some spirulina for roughage. Feed them 5x a day for about a week and she will get in the mood.

not really any input here...but years ago i had an "accidental" breeding in my tank. i knew b/c my catfish were going insane by the tapioca looking things dropping.

so, i moved my rosies to a tank fitting with plastic canvas horizontally to let the eggs pass through while the adult fish were unable to get to them to eat. i have also heard of lining the bottom with a layer of marbles that will protect the eggs from the adults.

i didn't thinkthey bred and moved them....sometime later i moved something else that tank...silly me thought my rosy barb fry were my first angels until it became obvious.

btw, my water parameters were far from ideal. off the charts hard. and, since my dh at the time neglected the tank which is when i actually got into the hobby out of the fish suffering....water quality was poor and overstocked.

thank you guys very much for everything. the female rosy barb died. she stoped eating and later turned out that she had some sort of rot that came out through the bottom of her belly. i have no idea what happened. she finely showed a big hole in her belly and i try some meds but...
