Any recommendations of good places to buy discus?

Hi everyone,

I'm new here (just joined today.) Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations (online or in person) of where to buy discus? I live roughly 30 miles southwest of Indianapolis, In. I tried using RFI out of Bloomington. Of the 4 I ordered, 2 died within a day, and a 3rd died within a week

(and yes, I acclimated them properly.) The 4th is doing great so far. (It's been about a month.) In addition to 3 of them dying, I'm pretty sure I didn't get the ones I ordered.

I've had good luck (so far) buying discus from my LFS, but in addition to having to be patient for them to get the ones in I want, I went in about a week ago to see what they had, and 1 of their discus had ick!!

(Sign on tank says "not for sale," for clearly obvious reasons.) But now even after that clears up, I'm VERY, VERY wary of buying anything from that tank.

Any thoughts and recommendations would be great!! Thanks.
 
You have 3 very reputable, reliable, high quality discus breeder/importers within a 'reasonable' driving distance from you (something over 3 hours approx.) - they are:

1) Central Ohio Discus ( Mike Beals)- Galena, Ohio (near Columbus)
2) Chicago Discus (Josie Christopher) - Chicago
3) Exotic Discus ( Jeff ? can't recall his last name) - Oak Forrest, Ill.

Google them to get their web sites with contact details, galleries, etc.

Being in Canada, no, I haven't had personal experience with getting fish from these discus suppliers.

However, having been a member (and now a moderator) on simplydiscus.com forum for many years, I can assure you that both Josie of Chicago discus, and Mike of Central Ohio Discus, have been well regarded and respected sponsors on simplydiscus for many years, and I have not only seen pics of dozens of their high quality fish, but have read numerous (into the many dozens, if not hundreds) of positive reviews by very satisfied repeat clients testifying as to their purchases of healthy, quality fish. They are both supplied by well known reputable overseas breeders with excellent reputations over many years.

In Exotic Discus' case, I've read on simplydiscus forum, many very positive reviews by Jeff's clientele, again many of which are or were repeat customers. His stock is also from a high quality source.

Check out their websites as I suggested earlier, and see photos of their stock for yourself. They only sell what they advertise - no tricks or duplicity - they have quality reputations to maintain.
Pick one & make an appointment to go see their stock first hand.
I myself have been a discus-keeper for 35 years and believe I have a pretty fair idea what I'm talking about.

As for petluvr's recommendation of Hans' discus , I agree, Hans is arguably one of the best, if not the best, discus supplier in all the U.S. He would have to airship to you though, with attendant shipping costs, whereas you could get high quality discus from any one of the other 3, and select them in person yourself right in their discus rooms.
