I was at the orchid shop today and found some anodized aluminum wire that is usually used for bonzai and holding plants in pots and such. I am thinking because it is so nice and flexible that it would be good for making a "zucchini holder" where I would basically make a spiral at one end and a hook at the other so I could twist pieces of zucchini onto the spiral and hang it from the side of my tank for the otos.

So is Anodized aluminum safe for aquariums?

I don't know about that, but I just stick my zucchini on a fork and place it on the bottom of the tank. Good luck.

Anodization is done to make a surface less reactive, and aluminum is pretty non reactive once it naturally oxidizes, so unless your pH is in the vinegar range I doubt there would be issues.

My pH is normally about 7.8 and with CO2 going it drops to about 6.8, so slightly acidic, but probably not vinegar.

The problem I'm having is that any other method I use to get the zuchini in the tank still requires me to stick my arm in to retrieve it. I got a 2 foot piece of aluminum wire, and my tank is 16" deep without substrate, so maybe 14 with substrate, so if I coil about 8" on one end to hold zucchini, and put a little hook on the other to hook onto the side of the tank, I can hang it in the tank for the otos and be able to retrieve it without sticking my arm in the tank, which is the goal.

No way, those are too bulky. A piece of stainless steel wire would be perfect, but I don't really have a way to bend it, even if I could find some. I've seen someone make these on another forum for their pleco fry to eat zuch from. They used stainless steel wire and coiled one end with a long handle and a hook on the other end. She just set the device so that the zuch end was resting on the bottom, but the top was hooked to the edge of the tank and could be lifted out when the zuch was gone.

tie a string onto a fork. pull fork up once zucchini is all eaten.

but make sure it is purple string........

Taari, those tongs are for retrieving things from the bottom of your tank. I have a pair at each different tank location in my house (my tanks are a little spread out !)
