Is there a special type of spawing slate that my angelfish can use? They keep laying eggs on my HOB cane and after two or three days the male eats them. I've tried to save the eggs but they always end up dying. Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop the male from eating them or an easy way for me to save them?

I just use any slate that you would get for your tank, I like the black slate because it makes the eggs stand out. When the male eats the eggs are they white or clear because if they are white then they are dead and the angels will usually clean them out from the good eggs at least mine do.

If the pair is new at spawing, some egg eating is normal. The usually outgrow this and become good parents. Any vertical surface will be used as a spawing site. I've had Angels spawn on plants leaves, filter intake tubes, rock work and even the corner of the tank. If you place a sloping vertical cone or piece of rock/slate, they usually prefer this. Good luck!

The eggs are clear when he eats them. This is fourth time they haved layed eggs. I've never had them become fry, he always eats them. Ill prop one of the rocks up and see if that works. They are ready to lay again hopefuly they use the rock this time.

Be patient. They will get better in their time. You can use ceramic floor tiles instead of slate if that is easier to get or even upside down earthenware flowerpots (clay type no paint).

if you can go to an LFS and buy another filter stem, do it, then when the angels lay eggs on it again you can switch out the stems and try to raise the eggs away from the parents.
