I just received 4 new discus in the mail and they all have some ammonia burned fins. Dorsal and caudal (tail) fins mainly.
Anyone have any good tips on how to prevent this from getting worse or good treatments to speed up healing?
Thanks.
Vic

QT with daily water changes of 50% minimum...and a healthy diet

No meds? Awesome! I think I can handle the water changes better than medicating. I am always reluctant to medicate unless absolutely necessary.
Thanks.

Yep intensive water changes as per above, proper diet, and they should be good as gold without meds.

I agree!!!

Don't forget alittle salt does wonders.

I have a big problem with people who sell Discus and have no idea of how to ship them properly. We use separate shipping water from one of our many holding drums and cut feeding 24-48hrs prior to shipping, Plus add an ammonia blocker ans sedative to ensure health fish arrive to all our Customers.

Good luck with your fish!!!

I know the guy who shipped them pretty well and he always cuts food at least 72 hours in advance and he even added a some stuff that reduces amonia. He said one pill treats 10 gallons of water and was surprised they got burned. Not sure what happed since they were shipped overnight FedEx; I even had 3/7 die. They were all about 3", so they should have been alright. The three that died did have leaky bags, so I am suspecting that didn't help matters.

As far as I know salt only helps when dealing with nitrite poisoning, not ammonia burn.

If the fish have ammonia burns, then ammonia was in a higher concentration within their body. This is stressful...shipping itself is stressful enough. The salt is primarily for a certain level of stress reduction as well as to curb any potential bacterial/fungal problems associated with damaged fins. Salt should have been added to the shipping water if the shipper really knew what they were doing. But then again, the shipper is unknown to us and maybe they did. Either way, ammonia burns were caused by the leaking bags.
