I'm having a hard time finding much info about this fish. Does anyone have experience they can share with me? I saw some at the lfs this week and really was fascinated by the look of them.

I have a 55 under the tree - it will be a while before I get all the accessories set up and cycled but in the meantime I'm window shopping, so... would that be large enough for the compressiceps? What kind of setup/tank mates? I don't feel like I need a ton of fish, but I'd like them to be interesting.

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply; I did Google this before I asked but because some of the info re: tank size, etc I've found is inconsistent I was looking for some people who had personal experience w/ this fish. :)

I have a few of them. They like alkaline 8.2ph warm water. They tolerate fish larger than them and thats it. Mine do well but its time to thin the heard in my tank. Keep lots of hiding places to try and lower aggression. In a 55g I would do only Comps if thats what you want.

Thanks, I really appreciate the help! This is still pretty new to me. I found some "cookie cutter" setups on cichlid-forum.com for a 55 - said a pair of compressiceps could possibly be kept with julies? So you'd reccommend against that?

I sort of have got my heart set on them now but if I'd have to keep them in a species only tank, I think I'll have to pass. :( Although how can I resist that face??

I have a lot of time to learn anyway; it will take a while to get the tank set up and cycled. Thanks again. :)

No thats not what I meant... In a 55g I would do species only. You can put anything you want from lake tang in a big enough tank.

I'm sorry - I'm still a little confused. So you mean this fish might do all right with other species, but not in a 55? :(

These are the two "cookie cutter" setups I found at cichlidforums for a 55 gallon Tanganyikan tank; they both include the altolamprologus comp. Sorry this is a long quote I've included, but I'm confused by the conflicting info I've found. I've never attempted a tank like this before and I want to get as much info from experienced folks as I can before I start. If you have a moment would you mind taking a look at them? No rush, since my tank doesn't even have water in it yet. :)

I was hoping to try a Tanganyikan setup since it seems a little more suited for a beginner.

BTW the species profile at cf says "Despite their large mouth size, they should not be a threat to other adult fish in the aquarium, including adult shelldwellers" = sounds like your experience has been very different?

Thanks again for your time, I appreciate it.

What is your Ph,Gh and Kh from your tap?

Straight from the tap my water, now this is with a test strip so not precise but just for a general idea, is pH ~ 7.8, gh close to 300, kH 120. I have very hard water.
