I just added to my 20 gallon high 2 Black Skirt Tetras and 1 Cory. My Gourami is chasing my tetras all over the tank. Should I be concerned about this? Or will the Gourami eventually "calm" down ?It hasn't bothered the Cory yet. These are the only fish in the tank. The Gourami has been in the tank by itself for about 3 weeks now.I suppose I could always ask the LPS if I could "trade " it in for another fish. For now, I "quarrenteened " in a "baby nursery" in my tank

Thank you

Rick

Gouramis (almost all except sparkling, licorice, and honey gouramis) are territorial to the point of being very aggressive. The larger gouramis, like the gold you have, prefer a larger tank. A single gold gourami in a 20g is pretty much the limit.

Ideally, you should get more black skirt tetras and corys (each a group of at least 6).

Gold gouramis are actually semi-aggressive along with other strains. Don't miss the samurai, pearl and chocolate gouramis which are actually not very aggressive at all.;)

i made the mistake of putting a female gold gourami in a tank with a male blue gourami. needless to say, the male scared the female to death. literally.

while most gouramis express territorial behavior between males, outward aggression is uncommon. gold gouramis (and the other forms) and some individual kissing gouramis are really the only gouramis that are aggressive towards other species of fish.

Thank you for all your comments and suggestions. I never knew this before tonight about the behavior of the Gold Gouramis. FWIW ,I just released the Gold back into my tank. The funny thing is before I had my problems with my tank my Gourami was never aggressive to any other fish except when I tried to add another Gold to the tank. I had the same problem with Blues before.

I stand corrected. I'm not a gourami expert; I only know what I've read from others.

jm: i must have one freakish neon blue dwarf gourami because it pesters my red-eye tetras and corys

If it is constructing a bubblenest out of plants, algae and bubbles, it would simply terrorize anyone that trespass its territory. Happens even if there is no female counterpart around.;)

I have five gouramis in my 75 gallon community tank, with tetras/ cherry barbs, loaches and a few other types of fish. There are 3 golds (2 females and one male) and 2 blues (one male and one female). Ive never had probs with aggression with them. So, I will have to say it goes to tank size more so than type of fish in this case.
