I've been trying to fix an AC110 this morning. I got the filter running, but noisily. I believe the problem is the impeller shaft. Initially I suspected that it was bent causing the impeller to rattle. When I removed the shaft I found down the center a spot that appears rusted or worn. So I looked online to replace the shaft. All the pictures of impeller shafts looked like a simple straight stainless steel rod. Mine is wider at each end and has a couple formed notches. So I looked to replace the entire motor instead. The model number for all the pumps is A16400 online. My pump has a different model number "A-01500". I got this filter used so I'm wondering if it is an older model or if its the wrong motor?

The smaller motor is A16000, so it isn't a motor meant for a different AquaClear. I'm thinking it's probably just an older (2007) model, but I think your best bet is to email Hagen's customer support:

I'd probably try and clean that shaft in some jewelry cleaner and maybe sand the rough parts in the middle down a bit. It definitely does look like a different part, maybe someone made a DIY replacement for the shaft?

Are you still in contact with the person who sold you the filter?

The filter was free with a tank I received. She knew the filter wasn't working but I took it anyways to attempt fixing. I'm not positive but I believe she bought the filter used and would probably not have any useful info on it.

EDIT: I emailed hagen with the picture of the impeller shaft.

That shaft is the problem. It's worn and can't be fixed. It causes the impeller to wobble when running.

The AC 110 motor unit is A16400 so that is the correct number. Your filter was made in 2007 so they may have just changed model numbers since then.

The impeller shaft number is A16551 if you can find it.

Replacement shafts and impellers are available online. As long as it runs at all the motor itself is working. That shaft is worn, but not as badly as some I've seen (and replaced,) main problem with badly worn shafts is not restarting after an electric outage. Look through the hole in the impeller and see if it's just large enough to fit over the shaft and properly round. If the hole is roo large or oblong that will also cause problems, and the impeller should also be replaced.

Ebay usually seems to be the best/cheapest place to find new Aquaclear replacement parts. As said they most likely changed part #'s when they changed the filter model names.

That shaft is very worn and needs replaced. I replace shaft and impellers at the same time as it is the only way to insure all noise ceases and that you maintain proper flow. Eventually, the seat and orifice in the motor wears out too. However I have but yet to find a badly elongated hole in the motor. There have a few that have been out of round but they usually work ok with a new impeller and shaft.

Ok, I'm going to wait for a response from the company. But I think if I buy a new shaft and impeller that they will fit in the motor I have now. If not it looks like the new motor is the same size and has the same latch system to lock onto the main part of the filter, so I could probably just replace the whole motor if I need to/

The response came in from Hagen today. I have an older model impeller shaft and motor. The new style shaft will however fit in the old motor. Hagen even offered to send me a free impeller shaft. I'm going to order a new impeller tonight as well.
