Alrighty, so I'm looking into buying a new tank when we move to a bigger house in the spring. I was window shopping in Walmart the other day when I noticed this 55 gallon full setup that would cost me overall 340$ in total with the cheap filter that it comes with, heater, fish net, stand, fish food, thermometer, top...

I would probably change the filter for an aqua clear filter...

Im on a budget..... low on money!..

Any suggestions?? Have any of you bought this set up?? what did you think?? or why did you not buy it??

Thanx!

Nothing wrong with the tank IMO, but are you getting the Walmart stand? That is the part I'm not a fan of, but my father is a custom cabinet builder, who beat the business into me, so I am quite biased.

Definately get better filtration

Quality wise not bad at all depsite it's walmart. Most of their 55 gallon are manufactured by All Glass and walmart just slapped on their own brand.

$340 is expensive though, in the walmart around Philly, PA i saw the same package. Tank kit(with filter, net etc all the junk you dont need) is $150. Matching stand is $75. Total was around $240. Get 2 aquarclear powerfilter, and you will have a pretty good setup at $300.

I almost bought it until i tried to lift that thing, then it was like no way buddy....

oh yeah.. i DO live in Canada though..thats probably what makes the price different.. the tank was like 270$ and the stand was like 80$.

Or should I scout some used equipement out???

I strongly recommend shopping for used. I bought a 50g I used to have with everything but the filter for 100$. My 180g, with everything, I got for 300$. There is nothing wrong with used as long as you make a good inspection of the seals and let it sit somewhere to test it for leaks.

just saw this in another thread:

Okay so theres a petsmart and a petland in my local shopping plaza. I'm looking at getting a 55g.

Petsmart has a starter kit thats 159.99 that includes a heater, a top fin power filter 60, a filter cartridge, hood and fluorescent bulbs, water conditioner, sample bacteria starter, sample flake food, thermometer, and a net.

of coruse just my opinion but unless you are really tight on budget i wouldnt bother with used stuff. I mean this is something you will see everyday and keep for a long time. NOT to mention the hassle of doing any kind of replacement on an established tank.

Honestly is it worth it to save 100 or even 200 bucks to get some used, dirty, scatched up crap instead of a brand new tank you are happy with.

Here's my gaga's inside guide(TM) to save on aquarium and still getting good stuff:

1) search ebay for petco gift cards. Most will sell with at least a 10-20% discount. Saw a couple $300+ went for $250. Just be patient if the bidding get too high, wait for the next auction.

2) wait for petco's coupon code. Petco.com runs new coupons everytime the existing one expires. Almost every month or two they will have a 20% or 30% off all coupon. (Search google for petco coupon code)

3)Buy the 55 gallon seaclear acrylic tank from petco which is a LOT better looking and expensive than the walmart tank. It will only cost $170 with coupon code and if you used the giftcard bought from ebay that will cost even less not to mention free shipping.

You will ended up paying a lot less for a much better tank. Only thing is i am not sure petco's shipping policy to canada.

anyway that's my plan if i ever sell this apt & move to a place that support a 55+ tank - buy the best stuff but with lots % off.

I bought the 55G set-up from Walmart (not the stand, I bought a good wooden one) for $150. It's been 2 years and the only thing I've done is add a second heater to the tank (we keep the house around 60 in the winter). The filter is still going strong as is the first heater. I believe the tank is made by all glass. I keep only basic community fish (tetras, barbs, cories, etc) and the filter can handle it no problem. If I had cichlids or larger waster producing fish I would upgrade the filter.

Having said that, I am not sure I would buy it again, just because I would like a bigger and wider tank. But if in the market for a 55G, I would definitely get it again.

I bought the Wal-Mart Tank & Stand both!

Tank was $158.00 USD & stand was ~ $70.00 USD

Tank, Hoods, Lighting all made by "All-Glass"
Filter is "TetraTec" and all seems to work fine for me. Then again, I'll be adding a 2nd filter in the future to get the added benefit of clean water!

Beware of shipping to Canada...they'll nail ya on the Import Duties if you're not carefull!!

While my tank and stand are not from Wal-mart, most of the equipment on my 55g is (my hobs, ugf, heater, etc.). Now, I may be wrong on this one, but I heard once that the aqua-tech filters from Wal-Mart are manufactured by Marineland (who makes penguin). That being said, I'm not crazy about my filters simply because it's hard to put different media in them, but they are fairly old and still work fine. I also have the aqua-tech powerheads on my UGF and they work great. So all in all, I would buy a kit from Wal-Mart.

I also would not buy anything that is "dirty, scratched up crap":) The tanks I've bought used look just like new, in fact one was only a couple of years old, the guy was just moving and wanted to get rid of it ASAP. It is possible to find good used stuff, you just have to be smart about it
