I have a 416 gallon tank that I want to use for umbees and the dimensions are 96 inches long, 50 inches wide, and 20 inches high. I was wondering how do you breed umbees and what are the proper ways to breed them without killing each fish.

From the Baensch Aquarium Atlas, Vol. 2:

"Females are sexually mature at about 10cm, males from about 15 cm. Open spawner with a strong division of labor according to the dimorphism. Direct brood care is performed by the female. Eggs are numerous and the larvae hatch after about 72 hours at 28ºC (82ºF)(pH and dGH of about 7). The young are free-swimming after an additional 6 to 7 days and grow very rapidly."

Under "Social Behavior:"

"Sexually mature specimens are bellicose; sexual partners show clear encounter rituals in which the female signals submission through a slanted to vertical upward head position."

That's all I got.

What to do

while the Umbees are little, you shouldn't have much of a problem. When they're bigger you'll need a divider in the tank. start looking for one now. general rule - get more females than males, don't get them from the same supplier (to avoid in-breeding), accessible hiding places for the female only is advisable, but may be difficult the larger the fish become (can knock over setups). good luck.

Those are nice dimensions for your tank. I have a divider on mine, too risky to keep male and female together in the tank. Right now, my female layed eggs with the male next to her. Hopefully some will hatch, if not maybe the next time she spawn. My male is super aggressive and just scared that my female will get killed. My male is 14" and my female is about 6". My other male is about 11".
