Hello all!
I have a 36g bowfront tank that currently has an undergravel filter and also the Penguin 350 (i think its 350? if not 170 at the minimum)...
Anyways the undergravel filter doesn't really fit that well in there and it just doesn't seem to make any difference. It's been in there for about a year and a half/maybe 2 years since I started the tank but I want to take it out and change my filtration options.
Is it going to disturb my fish terribly if I pull that undergravel out? And what would you suggest using to filter this tank? Another undergravel? A 2nd HOB filter?

I'd swithch the UGF to a RUGF, to help push debri out of a gravel substrate. Run the filter you have or step up to an AC 110 or Emporer 400.

Thanks for the reply I have been doing some research and I found a powerhead made to reverse the ugf flow.
Marineland makes a Penguin powerhead, 660 and the 660R which they say reverses the flow....

It costs about 18 bucks so I am going to give it a try, however the reviews on the page for my petstore say this thing is loud. I hope not! Do you think this is strong enough/good enough for a 36g? It does 170gph.... is that enough or should I be buying two?

I have one of those in my 15 gallon tank with the RUGF. I can't hear a thing. I have an Eheim in my 36 bow.

Thanks for the tip I just spotted those on a random trip to the pet store on my lunch break today.....How is it working out for you? Do you have to clean the filter out very often?

It has been working great. You are only supposed to have to change the filter pads every 3 months or so. You shouldn't really ever have to change the substrate that comes with it, just rinse it in some tank water when you change your filter pads. I'm very happy with it, although the flow is a bit slow. If I had it to do over again, I would probably get the 2236. I also use the "installation sets" because I don't like the green lines in my tanks.
