So I bought my brother a 3 gallon eclipse tank that I am going to put red cherry shrimp (rcs) in:).

The reason I did not just get myself another tank is I wanted to bring my brother into the hobby and also allow him to experience the joy of keeping aquatic life.

The tank has a bunch of java moss, an unknown specie of anubias (spelling?), and a java lace fern.

The tank is currently fishless (or in this case fishless and shrimpless) cycling.

I will be putting a sponge over the filter intake after the tank cycles.

I would like to know how many rcs I should put into the tank once it is cycled, I would like to have them breed so I will need a mix of males and females if that makes a difference.

My brother really likes the tank and the idea of keeping shrimp in it:D.

start out with about 5, easy to keep track of and incase some thing does go wrong you wouldnt lose that much. Gradually add about 2-3 in at a time once you see that the water parameter are stable and the previous shrimps are in good health. Add up to about 12-15 id say.

I would start with half a dozen. If you lose them you are not out a lot of money. If the tank parameters are good and they thrive I wouldn't add any more, because they will multiply like rabbits on their own. Good luck and have fun :)

Most people suggest about 10 shrimp per gallon so I think you should start with maybe 10-12. Sooner or later, they will populate the entire tank.

I think I will start out with six shrimp. Hopefully 3 males and 3 females.

The tank is still cycling.

I think a great number of shrimp to start with is 10. That way you get a nice mix of males and females. They don't add much to the bioload so you don't have to worry about adding that many at once. Just MAKE SURE the tank is completely cycled. They are very sensitive to nitrite and ammonia.

Here are some pics.

Can anyone I.D. the strain of anubias shown in the pic?

Comments welcome.
