2-stage water filtration - non-RO

I have city water that is very hard and alkaline. I have been buying purified RO water from grocery store at $2.20/2.5 gal.

I don't want to go the in-home RO route, but I did see a 2 stage undersink Water filter from GE (sold at home depot). Has anyone used this? Or at least have one where they can test what quality water comes out?
 
The one I saw on Home Depot's website is the GE Model GXSL55F.

It will remove chlorine and other chemicals, and taste and odor. Any particles bigger than 0.5 micron will also be removed. It's basically a bigger version of one of the Pur filters you attach to the faucet.

Be careful to change the filter on a regular basis, if you don't, it will begin to leach contaminants back into the water.

It will be nowhere near the quality of water you are getting with the RO you are currently using.

It's better than nothing, but for what it does, a bit overpriced at $99, IMO.
 
I have been trying to use about 1/2 RO and 1/2 treated tap (to remove chlorine). Occasionally just RO if I am trying to treat possible disease.

My tap water has very high GH/KH so I like the buffering, I just don't need it to be as high... especially PH, which is above 8.4.

I figure one of these filters would hopefully get it to about the level I get when mixing 1/2 and 1/2.
