I'd try iy with 1 male, and 2 or 3 females. This will (in most cases) disperse the agression and keep your male happier 
However, I don't know how big is the tank you currently have. To do this set up, I'd go with a 20 gl. tank minimum, so each theere is enough space for them to swim. Let's us know your tank size.

I own a 25gal tank... but the tank that this betta is in is just one of those plastic 2 gallon hex aquariums... its not large at all.. i tried putting it in my 25gal but teh danios wouldnt have it.. im ok leaving him alone.. just be nice for him to have a friend.
You could always get him a snail or some ghost shrimp as a buddy. He might pick at them if he is aggressive though.

I have never done it, but you are saying that you should NEVER under any circumstances (other than breeding) put a male and female in the same tank no matter what the size? Not even in a 55g or bigger?TheMightyQueenPixie said:

Never under any circumstances. It has been done from time to time, but I would never recommend it.. If they want to scrap, they will find each other, no matter how big the tank. It takes a blink of an eye for Bettas to tear each other to shreds.
