Hi, got a 14 gallon BioCube that is fully salted and almost ready to go. Here's my plan, just wanted to get input on it:

  • Put a fairly small piece of fully cured and set live rock on the bare floor.
  • Two days later, get a bag of live sand from the pet shop (is prebagged live sand a good idea) and 3-4 lbs of base rock (unestablished live rock), and put in the tank.
  • About 10 days later, get another 9-10 lbs of fully set live rock and let the cycle process finish.
  • After this point I will get 3-4 hermit crabs, 6-7 Nassarius snails, 1 turbo snail, and a generic cleaner shrimp. (Will there be enough food? I could always throw in a piece silverside for the shrimp and crabs, but will the snails be alright?)
  • After ensuring that everything is in reasonably good condition, I will get a few small fish (i.e. clown and the like) and start building up with some corals (any suggestions? I want to avoid more difficult varieties like stonies, and also want to avoid leathers due to personal inclination.)

Am I missing anything, or any additional ideas? Thanks a lot.

I have a BC14 too and really like it. As far as live sand goes, I wouldn't waste your money. Your live rock will seed the sand. 6-7 nassa snails also seem like a lot for a 14g but others may have a different opinion. I only have 2 in mine.

Good luck and keeps us updated! :-)

I was planning on having the live sand seed the majority of the rock, since it's much more cost effective that way. $19.99 live sand + 10 x 1.50/lb base rock is a lot cheaper than 7.99/lb live rock.

Just be sure to buy some live sand out of an existing system then, because the stuff in the bag is not going to have all the great pods and bacteria in it. In my experience the "live sand" that is pre-bagged in the stores is just wet sand in a bag.

I am not sure where you live but also check for local reefing clubs. I bought my live rock from another member's system for $2lb.
