Hi
I am starting a new 4 ft 110 gallon cichlid tank. Ive had freshwater fish for 10 years but this is my first for cichlids. just wondering what you think of my stocking list

1 male green terror
2 parrots
1 electric blue jack dempseys
1 pleco
Dither fish--either giant danios or silver dollars

what do you think?is that too much and will they get along
also what order should i start putting them in the tank..most are juvenile
thanks im so excited :thm:

that should be a pretty safe stocklist. You never know with Jack's though, many turn out to be wimps and are beat up by everyone but neon tetras and then you may get bullies that kill everyone but a dovii.

I'd personally grab a good school of the giant danio's first and get the tank cycled with them. Then throw in the pleco and the jack's and GT can be put in at the same time to prevent one from claiming the tank. as long as you have lots of different decorations for territories (large rocks, logs, pots, whatever you choose) and hiding places, you should be just fine I'd think. the GT should get a little bigger than the jack's. I'd try and get the same sex jack's though so you don't have a breeding pair, then the GT might get some punishment. BTW, don't bother with plants, they'll only get torn up. Kyle

I'd even get more than that for controlled aggression by overstocking, my gf's cousin has a tank with a bunch of oddball cichlids but because there's so many they can't just target any isolated fish...Almost all of his are South/Central American

what about rosey barbs as dither fish??..has anyone tried it...they seem fast.

also when you mean plants being torn up do you mean the roots out of the substrate or the plant itself? thanks

i plan to run 2 fluval 404's or 2 rena xp3 with a hob filter and 50% water changes every 1 or 2 weeks so is that ok if i ever plan to overstock?

I have some of these and some tiger barbs in my 75 gal tank along with several relatively mild, smallish (5-6 inch) cichlids. No problems at all. Rosys tend to stay high in the tank anyway.

Compatible

I have a 6 1/2 in green terror a same size JD an 8 in Jag and a 5 in serevum along with a common pleco and a gold nugget pleco they all are housed in my 120 gallon they all do great together. I feed them 2-3 times a day and do 10-20% water changes 1-2 times a month. needless to say they are very healthy and happy. I am sure they will do fine.

hey akapaul26--what filtering system are you using for that and what is the length of your tank?

Is there any reason your going with the 4 foot tank? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 110 is just a tall 75gal right (48x18x30)? When you hear 110gal you think its a big tank, but really it's not. If you have the space the 125gal (72x18x22) would be a much better cichlid tank. The extra 2 feet could help out with the aggression. In a 4 foot tank there is not much room to escape.

yeah you're right its taller...i have limited space in the corner of my living room that gives me exaclty 48"...so i have no choice..of course i would love a longer tank but cant get it...
