This is a current view of my 20 gallon tank, no plants at all but soon I will start with a planted tank of the same size, new fish, new ideas, any suggestions?

I'm a big proponent to go with what works well in your water and you have readily available.

For example, if you have really soft water I wouldn't try going with something like valisnaria.

I prefer the jungle look when it comes to plants, and generally rosette plants that are not too big for the aquarium, maybe lots of cryptocoryne with bucephelandra to highlight on the hardscape.

Livestock wise I would go for something small and simple, but in larger numbers.. I would be tempted to go with 40 or so otocinclus or plain old shrimp.

Not sure how much that helps, but it's the direction I would likely go.

Yes, Lalo, I would go as dougall has said. A 20g is very small for an angel & those loaches. Think about when they get to adult size in a year or so...

Hi guys thanks for replying, sure I get the point of doing what works I currently have all those fish for sale as I'm running a small fish quarantine and hospitalization business so all those guys are for sale after spend a couple of months in qt. For my new 20 gallon tank I'm lost, I only have the idea of plants and the only fish I think of is veil tail Ram, but due to the temperature that rams need it may limit the options of fish to include.

Hello guys, I must comment that I'm still lost with a new start for freshwater, I have a 200 liter tank that I got a while ago and it has been empty since I bought it, I have some fish waiting but possibly starting from scratch with another type of fish, they can be tetras, rasboras, corydoras maybe..; This time I don't want to keep angels, I'm a little tired of them and also the distributors are often rude and frustrating so I prefer not to deal with them, to be honest I'm looking to keep small fish, let me know your ideas.

Tell us more please Lalo. Do you still have neon tetras? Maybe shrimp would work with them, or dwarf corydoras? So cute! Tiny rasboras if you can get them? I know you don't have a lot of options. A pair of apistogrammas?

I have some blue tetras and also rasboras spei, and an angel koi. I want to get more rasboras but they are not available very often, you are right about the few options I have, I only have a red line rasbora, and it arrived by mistake in a purchase made by the lfs, they didn't know what it was but I took it , I knew it was an unusual fish, so I can probably start from the rasboras, although I don't think I can get more red line, I have never seen them available.

What is the tank dimension and is your water soft or hard? I'm a fan of dwarf cichild - some are pretty passive and others are a terror. If you have super duper soft water there are some really neat gourami. Some of them stay as small as 1.5 inch.

Measuraments are 120x40x50cm. The water I use has a pH that varies between 7.5/8, in saltwater the salt stabilizes the pH between 8/8.2, but in fresh water it stays that way.

What about swordtails or mollies? I'm not a live bearer fan so I've never kept them, but they might do well in your fairly high pH. I would vote no on apistos & most tetras, as pretty as they are. Some of the "sturdier" corys might be ok like aeneus or paleatus. It all comes down to what fish you can get that will fit your water conditions & in larger numbers than just 1 or 2. I'm sorry you live in a "fish desert".

Off topic. How did you make out with the hurricane? I read there were crocodiles in the streets of Tampico & other places, eek! Isn't that where you live? Fingers crossed for you & yours.
