I've been assisting with some field work this week and it has allowed me to practice some of my photo skills that have been shoved to the back since completing my fine arts requirements for my undergrad. Just using my 16 megapixel phone camera right now, but really want to get myself a nice digital for Xmas since I won't be flying home to see the family. Anyway, here's a few of my favorites from this week, enjoy!

Pretty nice pics for a phone camera!! It looks as if some of them are located in boggy or swampy areas.

Thanks! I'm actually really happy with this phone choice (Galaxy S5) if not just for the camera ability. It does start to suck when the light gets low though, which is mildly disappointing. The area we're surveying is near a loch so it goes from nice and grassy, to marshy to, then to ponds. Its nice for a variety of plants.

Thanks!

Nice shots, Tiff.

Thanks Mark!

That's one of my favorites, it actually has zero editing (with the exception of cropping). The lighting on that day was just perfect for the clarity of the image and the saturation of colors and contrast. I'm really happy with it.

Here are a few more of my favorites from yesterday and today. I'm pretty sure everyone on my instagram hates me as I use it to crop phone pics and do small editing adjustments (brightness, contrast, saturation, warmth). I've uploaded over 40 wildflower and other nature related pictures since Saturday night o_O 13645257_10154277872142159_4508136891120981473_n.jpg 13769480_10154270777612159_8043921182806484452_n.jpg 13770304_10154277872442159_5343212836873116591_n.jpg 13775623_10154277872342159_1355931198199715337_n.jpg 13781814_10154278036492159_4294094568542323485_n.jpg

Flowers always make good subjects because they let you practice at your own leisure. You have some nice subject matter.

In post 7 picture 1 doesn't really have a center of attention and the two out of focus flowers detract from the image because they are so large in the frame. I don't know how much control you have over where the camera focuses, but when I had a point and pray (no focus control) I would get around that by focusing it on my hand next to the intended subject and then taking the shot without my hand in the shot. Otherwise I might end up with a focused background and out of focus subject.

Picture 2 I wish the plant hadn't been chopped off on the left side. It could still be in that side of the image but the leaf and edges of the upper stem's seeds going out of frame reduce the impact the image could have.

Picture 3 Less of a problem than the previous but the main interest being so close to the edge of the frame detracts a little.

Picture 4 is lovely. I enjoyed this one.

Picture 5 is really good also.

Sorry if you weren't looking for input. I'll just enjoy and comment on what I like if you say so.

I'll take any constructive criticism thrown my way =) I appreciate hearing both good things and those that I can improve on! Especially since I'm debating making some of the best ones into a cheap little coffee table book that I can maybe sell a few copies of on Etsy. Some friends have suggested it, but I still have to decide if they're good enough for that.

Like I said, I'm reworking my muscles that have been slacking in the name of science for the last 9 years. So, I definitely know I need some improving. The first one, honestly I think I need to crop some more as well. I don't like the full out of focus one on the right, I think its distracting and maybe if I had only part of it wouldn't be a problem. My main goal in that one was to get around the backlighting, which I seem to have managed a little. With the other two, I tend to like things going off frame, but I do agree that the one with the modified leaves for flowers (pic 2) is a little more cut off than I like myself even.

It just makes me miss being a darkroom, where I could sit and tweak things for hours to get it right.

I have a surprising amount of control on the focus of the camera I'm using, but not as much as I'd like. I'm looking forward to Xmas to get myself one that I can really adjust to use the way I want. . . do you have any recommendations on brands (it seems like you're pretty knowledgeable)?

All great pictures.

I do have an S5 phone, and have not come to close to this kind of picture (I admit I don't really try though either)

Personally, I've had good luck processing files on the phone (rather than uploading them and then editing) using the Aviary app (https://www.aviary.com/) So all pics will remain at their highest possible resolution, and it's pretty simple to use,

As for a new camera, if you are looking DSLR, I would suggest taking a look at the Sony range of cameras, unless you have a hoard of (or access to) a bunch of lenses for a different camera system. Assuming you want to take pictures of fish, a good macro lens would be a good investment.
