Today I picked up 5 more mystery babies for free, I'm up to a total of 9 now. They can't sell the babies since they aren't in the inventory. I walked in and the dude was like "hey! here for more fry?" and as We were looking through the fry tanks I saw this poor little Blood Parrot. Poor thing was laying on the bottom gasping, he was a sad/dingy yellow color with many black ammonia burns. I asked if I could take it home for free ( i have taken sick fish from here before ). I talked to a manager and she said she couldn't let me take him tonight, she didn't agree with it but had to follow the rules to keep her job. She said if it had a "physical" wound ( scrape, missing eye etc.... ) she'd let me take it as an adoption tonight, but she had to follow protocol. She told me that she worked on Saturday and that if the fish isn't better by then I could have him. She pulled him right then and took him back the their QT.She kept saying she wanted to let me have him, but can't lose her job over it. So fingers crossed that it's still alive on Saturday and I get to take him home.

on a bit of a happier note here are some pictures

It was really cute, when I put the bag of new fish in the old fish swam up and hung out around the bag. They had come from the same tank at that store, so I imagine they were happy to see their buddies again

Very cute fishies - platy?

:( Poor blood parrot, part of me hopes he passed along - but maybe he'll hold on because Bally's tanks are the next best thing to heaven.

I can't go by a certain store's fish section anymore, too upsetting (& I don't have space for rescues).

I don't want him to suffer any longer, but I would like him to hold on long enough for me to get him to a good place. I had 10$ in my pocket and they are 9.99$...If I had a few more dollars I would have bought him right then. My 75 is slowly turning into a BP tank, and thats alright. Many people think they are reject fish but I find them adorable.

We are assuming platys. They put all of the babies in one of the tanks that they sell plants out of. The last time anyone really checked that tank had mollies, guppies, platys and green terrors. The dude, mark I think, looked for GT or any other cichlids and didn't see any. Mark said they look like platys and mollies and maybe a guppy or two.

get excited - we have quite a bit of tank work to do in the next few days

Hope you get the little guy, Bally. He's sure to be much better off in your care, even if only for his final days ... and, if he makes it, woohoo, happy fish!

I have to add that the store's policy is rather stupid: Ammonia burns are wounds. Just like chemical/electrical/fire burns are all wounds in people. *smacks the policy honchos who don't get it*

yeah, but it's not a physical deformity that would deter an un-educated buyer from buying the "cool fish with black splotches" :(

so the store doesn't care

Thread cleanup.

This is certainly a widespread problem throughout the hobby. Sometimes some chain stores are the worst, depending on which store in which location. That said, we ask you to avoid bashing any store by name at this site (deserved or undeserved). This keeps our site out of trouble.

Thanks for understanding.

PS.... sure hope you can still get that fish. Good luck!!

Sorry about that Kash, thanks for the fix

Ballyhoo for the rescue!
I'm glad they would let you get it if the parrot survives the long couple days!
Go get em!
