I've noticed that a lot of you guys have some pretty black sand in the bottom of your tanks. (Like FishyCat). They really make your betta's colors stand out really pretty.

I was wondering where you guys got it?

Also, what kinds of issues do you have with it? Do you have to change the lighting to keep the bettas from seeing their reflection? Etc...

Probably Tahitian Moon Sand -- A CaribSea product. Most major pet stores have / can get it (got mine at Petsmart).

Haven't had any issues with using it, although there's some debate on whether it's harmful to bottom-dwellers, so you may want to check that.

Cheers!

I got mine at Pet Supplies Plus....mine is just black marine sand...I think it was around $10 for about 14 pounds.

I just got some of this to add to my existing sand.... hoping it will look cool...

Thanks for the compliment! I use Carib Sea Black Tahitian Moon Sand. I found it locally (paid too much) @ an lfs, but it is available at Dr's Foster & Smith online. The normal one is Cory safe, but not burrowed (kuhli) safe. There's also a type safe for burrowers.

I have seen black marine sand that is safe for freshwater & cheaper - haven't tried it. I would definitely rub a few grains together for a smoothness check before using with cories...

I don't use black sand in the tank with my black betta, but every other color should pop! :p:

I've used tahitian moon sand but I found it to be way way way dusty, so if you have anything that'll stir up the bottom it's not too good (and impossible to rinse and fully eliminate the dust).

I've heard of a black 3m sand that is a uniform grain size that's not bad, but not sure where to get it. And there are various other black sands or small gravels if you can find them.

I've read about nightmares with the 3m colorquartz (doesn't sink, super cloudy, too fine, awful to wash). TMS does need to be rinsed well (get rid of the floating particles), I have not had issue with cloudiness aside from mulm... But I use mts to stir my sand along with plants, so I dobt often disturb the sand.
