How many Neolamprologus multifasciatus would be comfortable in a 16 gallon, and in a 29 gallon?

I just picked up some fry/juveniles from a friend and i'm not sure which size tank to go with. I don't plan on keeping any other fish in said tanks.

I have 6 of them living comfortable in a 10 gallon tank. I think up to 15 of them can be housed in the 16 gallon tank without problem.

Depends upon the footprint. Is it a standard 29 and what are the dimensions of the 16?

It's a standard 29g, and i believe the 16g bowfront is like a 10, but taller, and a bowfront (don't remember offhand how tall).

I wouldn't go with more than 6 in the 16 if the footprint is comparable to a standard 10 gal. In a 29g maybe more like 14-16 (just throwing out numbers) but it really depends on the individuals within the colony. Sometimes they get to the point where there isn't enough space for an unruly male or two which is just something you have to watch out for...

I would say 6 for the 16gal and 12 to start in the 29gal. But I agree with jpappy, too.

If you start with a male and female, you'll have all the tank can handle in no time. And it seems, at least with my setup, that they can perform "population control" based on the given environment. Mine breed like crazy, but only a select few are allowed to survive. Probably has to do with tank size and shell availability.

Thanks for the insight folks...

I guess i'll start with the 16g and watch closely.
