55 gallon stocking

Just came into a 55 with a wood stand. I am going with a Central/South American theme. Ok so I want to do either 1 of two options Stock wise. Just full out GBR only tank or 1-2 larger cichlids. The problem is I don't know which species I could have in a 55. The filtration would depend on which I go with. So what I would like to know is which species could I have. with your experience knowledge of you wonderful people on here. opinions are appreciated. Thx.
 
if you go gbr only i would suggest using live plants. it can get more expensive but well worth the investment. if you go larger cichlids, how many you have depends on the species. i keep both and they are great to watch but it all depends on you. if you do go with the larger cichids i recommend jack dempeys. they are colorful and pack a punch
 
If you want larger cichlids you could get a nice pair of Parachromis any species Jack Dempsey, green terror, fire mouth, there's a lot of ways to stock this tank.
 
Sevs are a pretty darn good looking fishie!
