i had gone to my lfs and noticed they have german blue rams for sale, they are only juvies and about quarter size.i was hoping to be able to get one cuz they are only 4 bucks and one of the fish on my want-to-get list.
i was wondering if one would fit happily in a twenty gallon long with the following:

  • 5 assorted livebearers(guppies,a molly,and a platy)
  • 1 vieltail betta
  • 3 cory cats
  • 3 kuhli loaches
if this would work outwould the gender type matter? plz and thank you:p:

I am not sure of the answer, but I wanted to wish you luck! They are beautiful fish! I hope to get one or two someday...

I have a Male German blue ram. He is great with my syno petricola's (small catfish), bristlenose pleco's, forktails rainbows. I had a dwarf gourami and they did not get along. The Gourami beat him up all the time, the fish store said it's usually the other way around so that is a bad combo. But all the other fish got along great. Since the Betta is a Labrynth fish like the gourami you might have issues with them. Most betta's stay on top and rams stay on bottom but my gourami went to the bottom to chase the ram. So it's hard to say, it's a gamble with a betta but you might be fine.

One thing I would suggest if your looking at the fish store for one is to observe the fish's color. small juvenile rams should not be super colorful. If they are extremely colorful but small they are probably hormone injected which are very common lately. They typically die in a week after getting them. Try to get a non hormone injected one which you can tell by the coloring. They might have some blue and yellow in them but nothing like what you see in pictures until they get past that juvenile stage.

Good luck, and if you do get them do me a favor and send me a PM after about a month as I have a betta I was thinking about putting in my tank but I don't want issues with the ram and him.

these lil guys are natural and no hormones injected, the betta was the one i was worried about getting beat up,he is extremely timid and gets along with his tankmates, would the gender of the ram matter?i have been wanting to get a 5gal for the betta anyways.

I would be skeptical of the betta and ram getting along. If the betta is the timid type, it might work. As stated above, if you do try it just have someplace ready to move the betta to if agression breaks out.

i think ill try it,if somethig he doesnt like is in his tank he just follows it around and stares at it and eventually gets used to it but i will be wary of agression
also can rams get aggressive?nip fins? does sex of ram matter?

i've kept rams in my 55 with a betta, and never had any issues with them
