I've got room for probably one more species in my tank and I was thinking of going with the Pseudotropheus saulosi for quite a while now. I've seen several local fish stores with them in the past. Well I stopped at 4 different places today and didn't see any. But a Petco of all places had the Pseudotropheus kenyi which look pretty similar but the colors are opposite. Of the ones they had most of them were blue and one was yellow. I was debating going with those but it seems like the saulosi might have a little brighter coloring. Is that true or just something that I thought I had noticed? I also like to have breeding fish in my tank. I just trade them into the LFS for whatever other products I need and I keep some. In the main tank I've got 3 fish that I raised from fry and some other fry that I plan on putting in the main tank once they get bigger. I've got one male and one female red face mac. The female was holding one time but lost them, I know I need more females but I can't find them anywhere.

I'd suggest you skip on the kenyi and continue your search for saulosi (if ordering online is not an option), saulosi are dwarfs and can tolerate other fish (including multiple males if the ratios are good) pretty well, kenyi get too aggressive, even in a large tank.

You'll also have a better chance of selling the saulosi fry, they are rarer (or at least not readily available in every store) than kenyi.

Thanks for the info, thats why I asked. I wanted to impulse buy those kenyi but I'm glad I wised up and researched first.
I also have a group of electric blue johannis, if that matters. Just very recently I noticed my female red face mac is a bit tattered. I assumed its because I need more females (again, cant find). But I wonder if it would be those johannis? I guess I'm not real up with which genus don't go well together I guess but I've been ok so far. Again, thats why I'm asking.
