Hi! I have two plecos, bought them at petco in the spring of '08, they were just teeny tiny lil fellas. They stay in my pond from spring till fall, then I bring them indoors. So, this is their 2nd winter indoors.
I have no clue what types they are, and would like to know if anyone could possibly ID them? Maybe even possibly tell me male or female?
I tried planetcatfish.com..but got confused, lol. I have no clue where to even start!
The darker one is aprox 9-10" and the lighter one is aprox 8-9". Hard to tell, they don't cooperate with a ruler very well, lol.
Anyway..here are a few pics I took recently.
You can see in the first pics, how they look a little starved..they are fine now, they just didnt wanna eat the first few days after they came in. All's good now.
Sorry the pix are so big..I tried clickable thumbs like I normally do for forums..but it wasn't possible to enlarge them here for some reason..when the new window opened they were still tiny.
O, and one more thing, just in case someone is going to complain, lol..I DO have more hiding places for them now instead of just the one log..& I am getting their wood this weekend..no need to lecture me, these fellas are well loved and cared for.
ANyway,onto the pix...TIA

The one on the left in the first picture looks like a common pleco, but the one on the right looks sorta different to me. Someone much more knowledgeable than me will be here shortly and they can help you, I am sure.

Thanks guys, I figured they were..since I got them from PetCo. And you know, they weren't even labeled as plecos of course, but as 'algae eaters'.
I noticed PetCo is getting better though with the ID's of their fish, last time I was in there they actually had the pleco tank labeled as plecos. And of course the price was higher than when I bought mine.
They did the same thing with the Koi...all their small Koi used to be like $6.99. It's where I got mine. $7 is a good price for a cull. We all know that's the Koi PC has..just culls. This year they upped their price to almost $20 for a plain lil 4" Koi. The Butterflies..forget it! They were more of course. Like PC has good Koi, LMAO! Cuz come on, you just KNOW that all the serious Koi collectors buy their babies from PetCo, (not complaining about my Koi from there..I love my baby)
Sorry for the rant..that just ticks me off.

ANyway, back to the plecos..like I said, I figured they were commons, but I was curious since their colors are diff, and they have diff patterns. The lighter one has some red to it as you can see in the pix. And their mouths look diff to me.

How can I tell if they are male or female?

Thanks,
Dani

Pterygoplichthys pardalis and there not really possible to sex also if a male and female were placed in the home aquaria they wouldnt breed cuz they need mud banks for there breeding site. They look nice.

My favorite family of pleco's are the Pterygoplichthys formally Glyptoperichthys. Its just ashame that they all get big the two smallest being the Rhino pleco (Pterygoplichthys scrophus) and Gold Spotted Sailfin Pleco (Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus) getting 9-12" but the other 2 commonly found both as supposed commons are the Sailfin Pleco (Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps) and the "Common" (Pterygoplichthys pardalis) getting 18"+

The 2 pictured are pardalis though.

Thanks everyone.

GER1023,
The lighter colored pleco, which is shown in the last 3 pics, has more of a vermiculated pattern..you don't think it is a P. disjunctivus?
I was just reading up on them both on planetcatfish since you gave me a direction to go in, lol..thank you!
It says; 'P. pardalis has a spotted pattern, where P. disjunctivus has a vermiculated pattern.'

I read this on several other sites as well.

My darker pleco, has weird spots, I wouldnt even know how to describe them, but the lighter one (the one on the left in the top 3 pics, and the one in the last 3 pics) def seems to me to have a vermiculated pattern on it's belly.

I'm not challenging you in any way, lol..you DEF know way more than I do regarding plecos, ;)
And it's really not THAT important for me to know exactly what they are, I am just very curious..and its like, nagging at me.
Ya know, it's like when someone says, 'hey nice fish'..I wanna be able to tell them what types of plecos they are..not just look like some idiot and go..'uhhh..they're plecos.':duh::laugh:

Anyway, so what do you think about the lighter one maybe being P. disjunctivus ?
Or am I just way wrong?

I had to look up the rhino pleco..he's cool lookin!

Thanks again!

Dont know, but they sure are cool!
