A few days ago, my figure 8 puffer "Bubble" who is in a 29 gallon tank with a sg of 1.004 developed a small white "ball" on the edge of his caudal fin. It looks like cauliflower and is probably a few mm across. I know if this is Lymphocystis it is rarely fatal and shouldn't really affect him since it's on his fin... but I am wondering, since it's on the very edge of his fin, could I cut it off? Maybe I am cruel, haha, but would that help at all or cause it to spread or what?

Hi, Liz. Actually, you can cut that off, especially if it's on the outer edges of the fin. When I saw this thread I wracked my brain to try to remember where I saw a mention of doing just that and I found it. Here's the link:

http://www.fishyportal.com/cgi-bin/pub/diag?c=v&id=48

Look down at the bottom of the article under Treatment. Cutting off the lump is mentioned. Yikes, though. I couldn't do the cautery that it suggests, I don't think. I don't know how one would carry that out, exactly.

I lieu of that I think I'd dab some good topical antibiotic on the edges. There is one specifically for fish, but I think I've seen Kasta, or Flaringshutter, or maybe Lupin, recommend even Neomycin. You could dab some on the cut edge.

By the way, I read another article that mentioned a study that was done using Acriflavin successfully. I'll try to find that one again and post the link. I think I would try the minor surgical procedure and treat his tank with Acriflavin as well, if possible.

I had both those articles on the hard drive of my laptop, which crashed and had to be replaced... sigh.

I would worry about the stress of this procedure. You might want to try a mild anesthetic to calm him while you do this. I know that puffers blow up when really frightened and that's not a good thing.

ADDENDUM: You would need to be sure to make your cut a sufficient distance from the lump so that you are cutting a clean, un-infected section of the fin.

Oh, I don't have a QT tank though. And the only fishy meds I have are rid ich and formalin 3. Do you think I could remove the fish, cut off the tumor, do a formalin dip and put him back in the main tank?

Puffers are VERY sensitive to meds. I would also be concerned you would open the fish up to even worse infection if you cut off a piece of his fin. Please post a pic of the fin in question.

I agree, wholeheartedly, with Pufferpunk, a photograph would be very helpful to confirm that this is indeed lymphocystis. There's always the possibility that this is something else entirely, though your description that it looks like cauliflower describes lymphocystis.

Since lymphocystis is very contagious, and, if this is in fact what this is, early action may stop the progress of the infection and also help prevent contagion of the other fish, the snipping off the lump that is on the outer edges of the fin is relatively safe and the fish should do well if provided with optimum conditions of perfect water quality.

If it is lymphocystis, stress is one of the factors that can increase the risk of spreading the illness in the infected fish, and that's why I expressed concern about possibly using sedation if you do opt to trim the lump off.

I've never had to trim or cut away any lesion from a fin, but I have read many articles by our members here, the goldfish gurus, that have used this technique in the past successfully for a variety of issues, and have had no problems with the fish healing up nicely.

If, however, this is some other issue, perhaps a bacterial infection, a different course of action may be more appropriate.

Photographs of the area would be very helpful.

Looks like you could just scrape that off with your fingernail & treat with Melafix. Be sure his water is kept pristine.
