Right now I have a 10 gallon with...

3 guppies (2 female, 1 male) fairly small in size
4 neon tetras
1 chinese algae eater

what are some things I can add or adjust in the tank to make it better?

swap the algae eater for some shrimp?
add more tetras or other fish?
get rid of the guppies for some different fish to go along with the tetra?

any help would be appreciated!!

I'd swap the CAE for some corydorays. They are cute and fun to watch. The CAE will get pretty big and as they age they lose their taste for algae and start eating fish.

Def trade in the chinese algae eater as it will out grow the tank.
The neons will be cool and are a good choice. If you have 2 female and 1 male you will most likley have a lot of babies in time!

You could try a small school of Rasboras, their schooling is constant and very entertaining to watch. Just go to your LFS and take a look at the Harlequins they have, I guarantee you will be impressed.

could not put it any better.

Get rid of the guppies add more tetras.

I'd get rid of the guppies cuz I have the same combo of neons and guppies in a 20g and occassionally the neons bite the male guppies tail. Now all 3 of my males have tattered tails.
