Hey guys.
I have 2 small peices of driftwood in my 10 gallon tank.. they ooze and make the water an orange color.. its mostly noticeable when doing water changes. Im wondering if this is dangerous to the fish?? The tank is stocked with

1 male betta
3 guppies
1 aquatic dwarf frog

The betta has recently got fungus, of which it is being treated for.

IME - some tannis is good - but too much w/ too little water can be bad. I would suggest taking one piece out at a time (or both) and soaking them for a few days-week (however long it takes) to let some leach out before placing back in the tank.

I don't think it's a problem at all. As long as it doesn't bug you it's not biggie. If you want you can do a water change a week to help reduce them and also change the carbon in your filter to remove them.

It's really up to you i have never had any problems with tannons so far ....*knock on wood*.... just do a weekly water change and everything should be alright.

The thing that is oozing is tannic acid. Some people purposely let this happen, as it gives the tank a "natural" look. It's not dangerous to your fish at all.

Do note that tannic acid will slightly lower your pH and lower your water hardness. This creates a perfect environment for, say, Neon Tetras, but not so much for other hardwater fish. With your stock, you should be totally fine.

If you don't like the color of the water, you can do one of these:
  1. Boil the driftwood until it stops leeching the tannin.
  2. You're treating for fungus, so this probably will not help: adding a bag of activated carbon in your filter. Depending on what you're using to treat the fungus, the carbon will take out both the coloring and the medication.
