I was encouraged to breed this Betta.....

If you haven't gotten enough input yet as to whether or not you should breed this male, I'll put my 2 cents in and say you should I like marbled bettas and would def. be interested in any offspring from this guy!

do you guys really think he's a halfmoon? we nabbed him out of a local petco, it was the first betta i had ever seen with any white, and i loved how he was all spotted.

i guess that would just be bonus points if he is. i tried looking up ways to identify, but i guess i don't fully understand how it works.

assuming his color is what it's supposed to be (that is, that he's a marble and not just a mistake) would that breed true with a marbled female? or is it one of those things that you just kind of have to hope?

try and fine a marble betta female the is blue and white just like the male breed them and then you can see what come from the spawn that way you may be able to see if he's all crossed up or not and also will give some female to work with nice fish but for me i don't care for the marbles look like culls to me .

He is Awesome looking, he makes my crowntail look BAD

Not a half moon.

I know it can be confusing looking at all the fin types, but half moon is actually easy to determine because it really specifically has to be HALF of a full circle. That means when he extends his fins, the front portion of his tail fin (the part closest to his body) should be a completely straight verticle line, or more drastically, point toward his head somewhat, not backward toward his tail.

So if anything he's a delta I guess. But he's not really a good example of any finnage type. Most pet store bettas aren't.

It doesn't mean he's not beautiful and that if you spawn him you can't get beautiful fry (and even ones that do have more perfect finnage if you pick the right female).

But it is much easier to start with a more perfect example of a fish, whose genetic background is well known and breed it to another of the same if you're going for something specific. For just starting out spawning bettas though and learning how to care for the fry and such, using him is fine.

Even when breeding siblings, you can often get a very wide variety of colors in the first generation. As I mentioned earlier, finnage spread is more dependent on the female's genetics, so if you bred to a good half-moon female, your chances of getting good hm fry are better. Beyond that, I'm not entirely sure there is any genotypic between a half-moon and a super delta or delta tail any way.
