How long should I wait after adding fish to add more?

Stocking is tricky, Tay. I'll admit I tend to overstock a little, whereas others tend to understock. It depends on a lot of variables (temperature, filtration, water change schedule, etc.). Just add fish slowly, have your tank overfiltered, and do 25-50% water changes every week.

Tricky is an understatement! I'm in the process of adding live plants as I have heard that it helps with a heavily stocked tank. I may just continue to work on that awhile before deciding on anymore fish. Maybe I'll simply add a few ghost shrimp to see if the Serpae decide to make a snack of them after plants have filled in. I just don't know.

I will see if I can find any of the Habrosus around. I'd like something that sticks to the bottom. Thank you for your help. :D

I would not add anything else in this tank. Your serpaes need much more swimming room as they are very active. They are also fairly territorial as far as tetras go and may not like corys. If I were you I would ge a 20 gallon long and then continue with the stocking plan being sure to have as many hiding spots as you do corys.

Just to give an idea of appearances, this is a habrosus.

This is a pygmaeus, following a Heterandria formosa

and finally, the other pygmy, this is a group of hastatus

If you like the way Serpae tetras look, try to find Red Phantom tetras. Smaller version, looks very similar to Serpaes, and a lot less hostile towards other fish in the tank. Haven't bought a Serpae since I saw a Red Phantom in a LFS over 20 yrs. ago.

BTW, I have kept all 3 pygmy species of cories and can confirm that habrosus do stay on the bottom the most. Hastatus are usu. mid to upper level or mid to lower level depending on where your midground plants are; and pygmaeus go all over the tank.

I ended up with the Serpae because the big chain pet store told me they were good hardy fish to start my cycle with. I should have done more online research before I started but it's a common newbie mistake. Now I am determined to stick it out with these fish because it was my fault I screwed up, not theirs. Some may say that the 10gal is too small for these 6 but I really feel that they are plenty happy and have a decent amount of space.

And thank you so much for the cory pics! Such cute little guys. I really like the looks of the Habrosus!
