Someone else will have to tell you that. I have never used any med on fish other than a parasite med on some silver dollars that I had that came in with anchor worm. The only thing I have ever used is lots of clean water and a little bit of salt.

melafix has melacula (spelling?) oil in it and i've read that this oil can cause harmful effects to the labyrinth organ of bettas. don't use melafix!!! or bettafix either, since it is basically the watered down version of melafix.
water changes, water changes, and more water changes are all you need. why are you using spring water? tapwater or well water with a good dechlorinator is just fine for just about any freshwater fish we keep (minus the really sensitive types). don't waste your money on bottled water.
do a bare minimum 50% water change every day for a week, use only a good brand of dechlorinator, make sure uneaten food does not get left in the tank, and watch for improvement.

For all the time i kept bettas (7 at one point, lol) i used (and still use in my big tanks) AquaPlus. even used it in unfiltered bowls (i know better now, don't bash! lol) and no issues whatsoever with the bettas.
I've heard that using Prime in an unfiltered betta bowl/tank is not wise, something about the ingredients that cause the sulfur smell that causes trouble in standing water. But if you have a lil filter running on that betta tank you shouldn't be having an issue with the strength of the Prime, unless you are using too much.
i think when it comes down to such a small water volume (5.5 gal) you are going to use a teensy tiny amount of Prime, to the tune of # of drops (i don't know the exact amount).
