Ok, so I have 1 angelfish in a 75g. along with some other S. American cichlids, a gourami and 2 bala sharks (those are moving soon)...

the other evening, I walk over to the tank, after seeing something strange out of the corner of my eye. Sure enough, the angel is laying eggs on one of the leaves of my amazon sword. there are NO other angels in this tank.

Is this common? What would spark this? At least now, I know it's a girlie, lol. I would have taken pics, but the severum ate up the eggs before I had a chance.

Female cichlids do get the urge to lay eggs, whether or not a male is present. Sometimes 2 females will do it and of course, the eggs never get fertilized. I've seen this happen with angels and also brown severums.

I have a male angel in my 55G, and I regularly see him cleaning a spot with his breeding tube out. I often wonder if he can some how see / sense the female in the 29G in the next room and is trying to impress her.

why not put the two together...

Are you talking about mine? the female is in another tank with a different male. They were all originally together but the pair were tearing anything that came close to pieces, hence moved to another tank.

How interesting. The infinite intricies of fish-keeping never cease to amaze me. The instinctual behaviours of mating, you would think, would only be acted out in the presence of the other sex. Obviously that is not the case. maybe I will try to introduce a male, and see what happens...

So, I came home from work yesterday, to a DEAD angelfish! She was just fine when I went to work, and when I came home, she was stuck to the filter intake. No signs of abuse, illness, injury, etc.

Has anyone had this happen? I was so upset...she was my favorite fish in the tank, and had been in there for over a year, since I set it up.

I know it is hard to lose pets, but its been a while since I lost a fish. I take for granted how attached I become to them. The tank looks so lonely now.

Wow! I'm so sorry for your loss!
