Transforming a goldfish tank to a planted tank.

You can put the sand in now, just a few things to remember:
1) Wash the sand very well.
2) Remove the fish while you put the sand in.

For the canaster, you could put a pice of sponge over the intake or in the tube.

Actually I need to add a question lol

I know I said I am going with black but I forgot which color is better at hiding the poop black or white?

A black oranda won't stand out against a dark substrate. As for "hiding the poop", that shouldn't be an issue if you keep the tank clean and don't overfeed. Good luck!

UPDATE!

I added the sand to the tank. After that i added my plants I had. I then added by fish after the water calmed down as well. I plan to add more plants. I was think about 10 tall Sags 15 dwarf Sags 1 Amazon Sword and 2 Red-Spot Ozelot. I am still working on setting everything the way I like it. Here are some pics. Suggestions? Comments?

nice looking tank! and beautiful finkids too!

you need a solid coloured background, IMO. blue would look really nice and then you'd see the black oranda. maybe try a dark royal blue? black i think would look ok too, but that one fish would end up playing the disappearing act, lol.

how high up is the end of your canister intake tube from the sand? if it's a lil ways up you shouldn't have to worry about having that sponge on there as long as the flow into the filter isn't so strong that it's sucking sand up. i have a Rena XP2 and the intake is less than an inch from the substrate of mixed sand and small gravel. i never have sand in the filter.

You won't have to worry about dark backdrops soon since the black tum tum seems to be changing his color. I want that puppy.:hearts:
